How to Relax for Parents

It’s hard to be a parent. You need to constantly worry about where your kids are, what they’re doing, why they’re drawing monsters on the walls – and you need to do all that while working and taking care of yourself. It’s no wonder that so many parents go through a great deal of stress every day.

Being a parent, in many ways, involves living your life for someone else. You need to dedicate yourself to your children and make sure that they grow up to be happy and productive adults. But the reality is that no matter how much you care about your kids, and how important you are to their development, you need to care about your own mental health as well. Your happiness matters, and your kids need you to be in the best of mental health.

Finding Time to Relax

Still, there is no denying that with work, cleaning, and family obligations, you have very little time to spend relaxing and trying to unwind from the long day, and several methods of relaxation take far too long and are not possible within most busy schedules. So if you need quick relaxation strategies, here are several tips to get you through the day in the limited time you have.

· Building a Quiet Room
If you have a large enough space in your home, you should consider creating a “Quiet Room.” When in the quiet room, you are off limits from your family. The quiet room should be filled with sights, sounds, and smells you find calming. There should be no distractions, no noise – everything around you should promote relaxation. The quiet room gives you an opportunity to find peace and solace for 10 to 30 minutes every day, and sometimes that’s all you need to feel physically and mentally calm.

· Visualization
When a quiet room isn’t possible, there is a relaxation technique that can be done in the same amount of time. Visualization is essentially the act of imagining yourself in a relaxing place. What makes this type of relaxation strategy work is the ability to use your imagination to truly transport yourself there, imagining the same smells and textures that you would feel if you were in the location that makes you relaxed. It’s not important where the location is, as long as provides pure relaxation.

· Deep Breathing Exercises
Inspired by Yoga, there are a lot of deep breathing positions that take less than five minutes and can be incredibly calming. You can choose which position is best for you, but the most basic involves sitting with your back straight in a chair and taking slow, controlled deep breaths, breathing in through your nose and out through your mouth, and repeating 10 to 20 times.

· Caffeine Free Herbal Teas
There are a number of herbal remedies for anxiety. But even if you choose to avoid any herbal medicine the simple act of sitting back with caffeine free herbal tea and spending a few moments drinking it slowly and giving time to yourself can be a big help. If you want to try the herbal remedies, look for those with kava, passionflower, and peppermint.

· Exercise
It’s easy to forget about your own physical health when you’re a parent, but as you get older your physical health and your mental health are strongly linked. Physical health problems don’t necessarily cause anxiety (although they can), but when you spend all your energy being a parent, you often forget about releasing the physical energy in your body, and if you don’t find a way to relieve it, it can affect the way you feel every day. Caring for your personal health with regular exercise will drastically reduce your chances of getting a panic attack and increased anxiety in the future.

· Create Better Routines
Routines help a great deal with comfort. When you know exactly what you’re doing and when, because you have developed these working routines, you become more comfortable throughout the day. Routines should be focused on ensuring that you experience less stress throughout the day, so if you need more time in the day to get the kids ready in the morning or relax from a long day of work after you get back, develop and keep to that working routine so that your daily life is more comfortable.

Getting a Handle On Your Personal Stress

Being a parent is stressful. Being a parent that ignores their own mental health problems is even more so. Your kids will pick up on the stress you experience every day, and your quality of life overall will suffer if your anxiety goes ignored.

Make sure that you take care of your anxiety regularly, through routines, exercises, relaxation techniques and more. If you can get your mental health in control, you’ll find that every aspect of your life becomes healthier and more manageable.
